How to Wash Gore-Tex Correctly – Wash, Dry and Re-proof

Many people are afraid to wash Gore-Tex and other membrane jackets, but the opposite is the problem: dirt, sweat and body oils clog the membrane and make the jacket breathe worse and feel clammy. Correct washing is actually what keeps a shell jacket working. Here is how to do it, and how to wake the water repellency again.
Water repellency and membrane are two things
The membrane inside the jacket stops water from outside and lets sweat out. The durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on the outside makes water bead and run off. When the fabric 'wets out' and soaks up water, it is the DWR that is worn – not necessarily the membrane.
This is why you MUST wash a membrane jacket
Body oils, sweat and dirt settle on and in the membrane and make it breathe worse – then the jacket feels clammy even in dry weather. Regular washing with the right product is what keeps the membrane open and working.
Wash – step by step
Use a wash made for technical garments, and stay away from anything that leaves a film.
- Close all zips and hook-and-loop fastenings, and empty the pockets.
- Wash with a technical wash – not ordinary detergent with additives.
- Wash at the temperature the care label states, and run an extra rinse.
- Never use fabric softener – it clogs the pores and ruins breathability.
Reactivate the water repellency with heat
After washing, gentle heat can wake the DWR again: a short spell in the tumble dryer on low heat, or ironing on a low setting with a cloth in between. Always check the care label. If water no longer beads, the jacket needs fresh proofing.
