Reactivate Water Repellency with Heat – Before You Re-proof

By TaVare · updated 2026-07-27

Before you buy new proofing: try heat. The water-repellent (DWR) finish on a jacket can often be 'woken up' with a little heat, so water beads again without re-proofing. Here is how to do it safely, and when it isn't enough.

Why heat works

Over time the DWR molecules on the outer fabric lie down and lose the ability to bead water – especially after washing. A little heat makes them stand up and align correctly again, so the surface repels water once more. That is why a jacket often beads better right after a spell in the tumble dryer.

How to do it

Always check the care label first for the allowed temperature.

  1. Wash the jacket clean first – heat sets dirt as readily as it sets DWR.
  2. Tumble the jacket on low heat for 20–30 minutes, OR
  3. Iron it on a low setting with a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  4. Do the drop test. If the water beads, you're done – no need to re-proof.

When heat is NOT enough

If the DWR is fully spent, heat alone won't help – then you have to re-proof (and then activate with heat). The rule is simple: try heat first, and only re-proof if the drop test still shows the water soaking in.

Unsure about temperature? Send the jacket to us

Can the jacket take the tumble dryer? How hot can it be ironed? If you're unsure, we do it correctly according to the garment and its care label – wash, heat activation and proofing when needed. You see the price before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Can heat alone make a jacket water-repellent again?+

Often yes, if the DWR has just lain down. If it is fully spent, you have to re-proof and then activate with heat.

Does the tumble dryer ruin a shell jacket?+

Not on low heat, if the care label allows it – low heat actually reactivates the water repellency. Always check the label.

Can I use an iron instead?+

Yes, on a low setting with a cloth in between, so the iron does not touch the fabric directly.

Can you do it for me?+

Yes. We wash, heat-activate and re-proof as needed. You see the price before you order.
