Jacket 'Soaking Up' Water at the Shoulders? It Has 'Wetted Out'

Do you notice your shell jacket going dark, heavy and clammy right where the backpack and shoulders are? It's called 'wetting out', and it is a sign the water-repellent finish is worn – not that the membrane has failed. Here is what actually happens, and how to make the jacket bead again.
What 'wetting out' is
When the water-repellent (DWR) surface is worn, the outer fabric stops beading water and starts absorbing it instead. The fabric goes dark and saturated. This is 'wetting out' – and it happens first where wear is greatest: shoulders, upper arms and where backpack straps rub.
It doesn't mean the jacket is leaking
Even though the outer fabric is wet, the membrane inside may still be intact and keeping water out. But a water-saturated outer fabric breathes far worse, so sweat builds up inside and the jacket feels clammy and cold. The feeling of getting wet often comes from inside, not outside.
How to fix it
The fix is a wash and fresh proofing, in that order:
- Wash the jacket with a technical wash (no fabric softener) – DWR won't bond to dirt.
- Activate any remaining DWR with a little heat: a short tumble on low heat, or ironing with a cloth.
- Do the drop test. If the water beads now, you're done.
- If it still doesn't bead, re-proof with wash-in or spray, and activate with heat.
