Re-proof a Softshell Without Clogging Breathability
By TaVare · updated 2026-07-27
A softshell keeps you dry and warm because it breathes through the whole fabric – not via a sealed membrane like a hardshell. That is exactly why proofing must be done gently: get it wrong and you clog the tiny air channels and the jacket goes clammy. Here is how to re-proof a softshell correctly.
A softshell breathes differently from a hardshell
A softshell does not have a waterproof membrane, but a tightly woven, airy outer fabric with a water-repellent surface (DWR). It lets a lot of air (and sweat) through, which is why it is so comfortable on the trail. But it also means it is not fully waterproof – and that anything forming a film ruins the breathability.
Spray is often better than wash-in
On a softshell, spray proofing is often the best choice: you put the product only on the outside, where it's needed, without treating the inside. Wash-in treats the whole fabric and can in some cases clog the airy channels more than necessary. Either way: never fabric softener, which suffocates breathability.
How to do it
Clean jacket first – DWR won't bond to dirt.
- Wash the softshell with a technical wash, without softener.
- Apply spray proofing evenly to the damp or dry outer fabric (follow the product).
- Activate with a little heat: low tumble or ironing with a cloth, if the care label allows.
- Do the drop test on the shoulders to check the water beads.
Rather not? We do it by garment
We clean and re-proof softshells according to the garment and its care label, so the breathability is preserved. You order online, and you see the price before you order.

Frequently asked questions
Can I re-proof a softshell in the machine (wash-in)?+
You can, but spray is often better on a softshell because it treats only the outside and doesn't clog the airy channels.
Is a softshell waterproof?+
No, it is water-repellent and breathable, not fully waterproof. Proofing makes it bead light rain, but in heavy rain you need a hardshell.
Why must I avoid fabric softener?+
Fabric softener forms a film and suffocates the breathability the softshell is built for.
Can you re-proof the softshell for me?+
Yes. We clean and re-proof according to the garment and its care label. You see the price before you order.
