A rain jacket that soaks up water instead of letting it bead off has usually lost its water-repellent surface – not its waterproofness. A wash and fresh proofing make it bead again. Here is how to do it.
Check with the drop test first
Sprinkle a few drops of water on the shoulders. If it beads off, all is well. If the water soaks in and darkens the fabric, it is time to wash and re-proof. It is a simple way to avoid guessing.
Wash first – always
New proofing does not bond to a dirty jacket. Wash the rain jacket with a technical wash, without softener, and run an extra rinse. Only then is the fabric ready to take the proofing.
Re-proof: wash-in or spray
Wash-in (in the machine) gives even coverage; spray lets you keep the product on the outside only – useful if the jacket has a mesh liner. After applying, activate the proofing with a little heat: a short tumble on low heat, or ironing with a cloth in between. Always check the care label.

Kids' rain gear and everyday jackets take a lot of use and washing, so the water repellency wears faster. Do the drop test more often, and re-proof when water stops beading. The method is the same.
