A down jacket keeps you warm because the down traps air. If the down gets wet, it clumps and loses its insulation – and then it barely matters how thick the jacket is. So proofing a down jacket is about two things: a water-repellent surface on the outer fabric, and, on many modern jackets, a water-repellent down inside. Here is how to keep both in order.
Why wet down is so bad
Dry down is small, airy clusters that hold in warmth. When they get wet, they collapse into clumps and stop insulating – and wet down dries slowly. Keeping the jacket water-repellent is therefore not just comfort, but what makes the jacket actually warm in wet weather.
The outer fabric: ordinary DWR proofing
The outer fabric of a down jacket has a water-repellent (DWR) finish just like a shell jacket. It wears and is renewed the same way: wash the jacket clean, re-proof with wash-in or spray, and activate with a little heat. Do the drop test to check it's needed.
Wash and re-proof in the same round
Proofing is closely tied to washing, because a down jacket has to be dried correctly anyway.
- Wash the down jacket with a down or technical wash, without softener.
- Dry it in the tumble dryer on low heat with a couple of clean tennis or dryer balls that break up the clumps, until the down is fully dry and lofty again.
- Re-proof the outer fabric with wash-in or spray as needed.
- Activate with a little heat, and do the drop test.
