Zipper Won't Close – the Slider or the Whole Zip?

A zip that will not close, or that slides open on its own, does not always mean the whole zip needs replacing. Often it is just the little slider – the part you pull – that is worn, and that is a quick, inexpensive repair. Here is how to work out what is actually wrong.
Check the teeth first
Look at the teeth, the two rows that grip into each other. If they are intact, even and firmly attached to the tape, the zip itself is fine. Then the problem is almost always in the slider, not the teeth.
How to recognise a worn slider
A worn slider can no longer press the teeth properly together. Test it like this: pull the slider up and see whether the teeth lock right behind it. If they lock there and above, but come apart lower down or slide open again, the slider is worn – and then it is usually enough to replace just that.
When does the whole zip need replacing?
If teeth are missing, bent or have come off the tape – or the tape itself is torn – the whole zip needs replacing. That is a bigger job, where the zip is unpicked and a new one sewn in, especially in jackets, boots and bags.
