Coffee Stain on Clothes – How to Get It Out
By TaVare · updated 2026-07-27
Coffee sets with heat and time, just like tea and red wine – it is the tannins that bind in. Act fast and with cold water, and most coffee stains come out. Milk and sugar add a little grease and protein, so a latte is a bit more demanding than black coffee.
Do this first
Blot up as much of the coffee as possible with kitchen paper – do not rub. Then rinse the stain from the back with cold water, so the coffee is pushed out of the fabric rather than further in.
Fresh stains – step by step
Cold water is the key, because heat sets the tannins.
- Rinse from the back with cold water as much as possible.
- Apply a little liquid detergent and let it work for a few minutes.
- For coffee with milk and sugar: use an enzyme detergent, which also breaks down grease and protein.
- Wash at a low temperature, and check the stain is out before you dry.
Old coffee stains
An old coffee stain needs a soak in cold water with a colour-safe oxygen bleach, repeated if needed. Tannin sets with time, so a really old stain cannot always be removed completely.
Delicate fabrics
On wool, silk or garments labelled for cleaning you should not rub hard. Blot gently and bring the garment in. We clean according to the fabric and care label, and you see the price before you order.
