Knowing the different stain types and how to remove them is half the job: almost every stain belongs to one of four chemical families – protein, tannin, grease or pigment – and each family needs its own method. Treat a protein stain like a grease stain, and you set it instead of lifting it. Here are the categories, the right approach to each, and the one rule that applies to all.

Protein stains: cold water and enzymes

Blood, sweat, egg, milk, dairy and ice cream are protein-based stains. The common thread is that protein coagulates – sets – with heat, just like egg white in a frying pan. Use hot water, a tumble dryer or an iron, and you lock the stain into the fibres. The fix is cold water and an enzyme detergent that breaks the protein down, ideally with a cold soak first.

Tannin stains: plant dye that sets with heat

Red wine, coffee, tea, fruit, berries and fruit juice are tannin stains – colour from plants. They resemble protein stains in one way: heat and time set them, so cold water applies here too. Use a colour-safe, oxygen-based stain remover, and avoid putting natural soap straight onto some fresh tannin stains, as that can set them. Rinse from the back and repeat the treatment rather than reaching for heat.

Grease stains: dissolve them, don't rinse them

Butter, cooking oil, cosmetics, creams, body oil and tar are grease-based stains. Water alone will not rinse them out, because oil and water do not mix – you have to dissolve the grease. First lift the excess with a little cornstarch or talc, then use a dish soap or a stain remover that binds grease. Lukewarm water is fine here, unlike on protein and tannin stains.

Pigment and combination stains

Ink, marker, paint, mud, hair dye and rust are pigment or particulate stains – colour and solid particles that must be lifted out mechanically or with solvent, and some (permanent marker, old rust) are almost impossible to remove fully. Rust needs acid or a reducing agent, never chlorine. Many real-life stains are also combinations of several families, and then the order matters:

  • Chocolate = grease + protein + sugar: do the cold protein step first, then the grease step.
  • Make-up = oil + pigment + wax: dissolve the grease, then lift the colour.
  • Work from the mildest to the strongest product, one step at a time.

The one rule for all stains

Whatever the category, the basic principles are the same. Follow these, and you rarely make a stain worse:

  1. Identify the stain and the fibre before you do anything.
  2. Act while the stain is fresh; blot, don't rub, and work from the back and from the outside in.
  3. Always test the product on a hidden spot first.
  4. Use cold water until you are sure – heat sets protein and tannin.
  5. Use oxygen bleach, not chlorine, on colours, wool and silk.
  6. Never tumble dry or iron until the stain is completely gone.
