Why does activewear smell even after washing?
Cotton soaks up water; synthetic sports fibres do the opposite. They push water away but attract oil – including the body oil that comes with sweat. The bacteria that produce odour cling to this oil, deep inside the fibre. A short, cold wash with too little water and the wrong product does not lift the oil, so the bacteria and smell stay behind after washing, ready to flare up the next time you get warm and sweaty.

- Pre-soak in cool water with about a cup of white vinegar for half an hour to break the bacterial bond – or use a sports wash made to cut oil.
- Wash at the warmest temperature the label allows (often 40) – heat loosens the oil better than cold water.
- Dose detergent correctly, never extra 'to be safe', and skip fabric softener entirely.
- If the smell is set in, add an oxygen-based odour remover; do not overload the drum, so garments rinse clean.
Drying and storage
Air dry activewear. High tumble-dryer heat can bake in residual odour and damage elastane, so the garment loses shape and stretch. Hang garments with airflow, not crumpled, and never put them back in a damp gym bag. Dry, airy storage stops new bacterial growth from starting between washes.
Maintain the machine
If clean laundry keeps smelling, the problem may be in the machine. Oil and bacteria build up as an invisible biofilm in the drum, seal and detergent drawer, especially if you always wash cold. Run an empty maintenance wash at the highest temperature with a little oxygen cleaner now and then, and leave the door and drawer open between washes so the machine dries out.
