Dry Clothes Correctly – Air-Dry vs Tumble Dryer

By TaVare · updated 2026-08-14

The choice between air-drying and the tumble dryer decides more of your clothes' lifespan than the wash itself does. The lint you empty from the dryer is textile worn loose from your garments – heat and friction are harder on the fibres than a wash cycle is. Here is how to dry different garments correctly, and when you are better off leaving the job to professionals.

Why drying wears clothes more than washing

Most people think of the wash as the hard part for clothes, but most of the wear happens in the drying. The tumble dryer does two things fibres dislike: it heats them, so cotton and wool can shrink and elastane loses its spring, and it throws the garments against each other, so the surface pills and thins. The lint you empty is the proof – it is your clothes in miniature. Air-drying is almost always gentler, and costs nothing in electricity.

When the tumble dryer really is the best choice

The dryer is not all bad. For robust cotton items where you want softness and fluff – towels, bed linen, socks and cotton underwear – it gives a better result than stiff air-drying, as long as you use low to medium heat and take the items out while they are just slightly damp. There is also one technical exception: a down jacket dries best in the dryer on low heat with a couple of dryer balls or clean tennis balls, which knock the down clumps apart so the jacket regains its loft. For everything else – wool, silk, elastane, synthetic activewear and moulded garments – air is the safe choice.

Hang or lay flat – how to dry each garment

The drying method itself depends on the garment:

  • Knitwear and wool: always lay flat and reshape to the right size. Hang a wet jumper and the weight pulls it long and shapeless.
  • Shirts and dresses: hang on a hanger straight away – they smooth out as they dry, saving you much of the ironing.
  • Trousers: hang by the legs or the waistband, and smooth out the seams.
  • Avoid direct sun, which fades colours, and a scorching radiator, which stiffens cotton and can scorch delicate fabrics.
  • Always reshape the garment while it is damp – that way the fibres 'remember' the shape as they dry.

How to dry clothes faster without heat

What dries clothes is airflow, not necessarily heat. To speed up air-drying, start in the washing machine: an extra or higher spin flings out more water mechanically, which is far gentler than boiling the water away with heat afterwards (just not on wool and the most delicate pieces). Then hang the garments well spaced, ideally in a room with a little draught or a fan. Do not pack the drying rack full – clothes squashed together dry slowly and can start to smell. If you dry indoors, ventilate well so the moisture does not settle as mould in the room.

When should you leave it to professionals?

You can manage correct drying yourself for most of your wardrobe. But structured and tailored pieces, delicate silk and anything marked 'dry clean only' are not things to guess your way through at home – a dry cleaner handles the whole route from wash to drying and finishing, so the garment keeps its shape. If a piece has already shrunk or gone shapeless from wrong drying, we can often reshape and rescue it. You send it to us, you order online, and you see the price before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Is air-drying always best?+

Mostly it is gentler – the heat and friction in the dryer wear most on wool, silk, elastane and synthetics. But for towels and robust cotton the dryer gives a softer result. The danger lies in high heat on delicate fabrics.

Why do clothes shrink in the tumble dryer?+

The heat makes the fibres draw together – wool felts, and cotton that is not pre-shrunk can get smaller. Low heat and removing items while damp, or air-drying, prevents it.

Can I tumble dry a wool jumper?+

No. Heat and movement felt the wool, and the jumper shrinks and stiffens. Lay it flat and reshape it to the right size while damp.

How do I dry clothes fast without a dryer?+

Start with a good spin in the machine, hang the garments well spaced and make sure air moves around them – a fan or a little draught helps more than heat. Avoid packing the drying rack full.
