That's why we assess the fill and the fabric before choosing a method, rather than treating every jacket the same. Fill gives warmth through loft, and it must be cleaned and dried correctly – otherwise it clumps, loses insulation, and can develop mildew and odour if left damp.
Why washing at home is risky
Winter jackets are most often ruined in the washing machine at home. Ordinary detergents can strip the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish and coat the down, a harsh spin can damage the baffles that hold the fill in place, and the wrong heat can distort or melt a synthetic shell. A light surface refresh at home can be fine for simpler jackets per the care label, but when down, synthetic fill or a membrane is involved – or the label says professional clean – it's safer to let a professional assess the garment.
Salt, grime and end of season
The Norwegian winter leaves its own marks. Road salt shows as white, alkaline tide-lines on hems and cuffs, and salt along with grit and body oil from the collar builds up over a season. Salt is corrosive and best removed rather than left in the fibres. Clean the jacket at the end of the season, and it can be stored clean – soiled natural fill and wool attract moths – and it comes back out ready for next winter, with loft and water-repellency in better shape. When water stops beading off the surface, it may be time to re-proof.
