Shrunk Your Wool Sweater? How to Rescue It

A wool sweater that has shrunk is not necessarily lost. Shrinking happens when the wool fibres felt together, and with a little patience you can often soften them and reshape the garment. Here is how – and what you should know about what can be saved.
Why the sweater shrank
Wool shrinks when the tiny scales on the fibres lock into each other – which happens from movement, temperature shock and the wrong detergent, not from heat alone. To avoid it next time, see the guide on washing a wool sweater.
How to stretch it back out
The goal is to soften the fibres and gently reshape the garment while it is damp.
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a little hair conditioner or wool soap – it softens the fibres.
- Soak the sweater for 10–30 minutes without rubbing.
- Gently squeeze out the water (do not wring), and lay the sweater flat on a towel.
- Gently stretch and reshape it back to the right size while damp, and let it dry flat.
What you can – and cannot – get back
You usually get the size back, but not always the original loft and softness. Felting is partly permanent, so be realistic: a heavily shrunk sweater rarely becomes exactly like new, but is often perfectly wearable again.
Heirlooms and bunad: leave it to professionals
