How to Remove Sweat Smell From Clothes That Still Smell After Washing
By TaVare · updated 2026-07-28
Removing sweat smell from clothes is about breaking down bacteria and body oil that have lodged in the fibres – not about removing visible dirt. Sweat itself is almost odourless; the smell comes from bacteria feeding on sweat and body oil in the fabric. That is why the smell returns the moment you sweat, even right after a wash, if the residue was never properly rinsed out. Here is why it happens, and how to remove set-in sweat smell for good.
Sweat smell is bacteria, not dirt
Fresh sweat is almost odourless. The smell appears when bacteria on the skin and in the fabric break down sweat, body oil and skin residue and release odour compounds. So a garment that smells of sweat has a bacteria-and-oil problem, not a dirt problem. That explains why a simple rinse is not enough: you have to break down and rinse out the oil and bacteria stuck in the fibre, not just wet the surface. It is worst under the arms and around the collar, where sweat and body oil gather most.
Why the smell comes back even after washing
Many people wash sweat smell at a low temperature, with a small dose and fabric softener – and wonder why the garment smells again the first time they sweat. The reason is that the body oil was never fully removed. Synthetic materials (polyester in activewear) are especially oil-loving: they hold on to body oil that lukewarm water and too little detergent cannot dissolve. The residue stays in the fibre, the bacteria bloom as soon as the garment gets damp again, and the smell is 'set in'. The garment is not ruined – it is just incompletely washed.
How to remove set-in sweat smell
The goal is to dissolve the oil and kill the bacteria, not to drown out the smell. Do this (always check the care label first):
- Soak the garment in cold water with a cup of white vinegar for 30–60 minutes. The vinegar breaks down the odour compounds and knocks back a share of the bacteria.
- Then wash with a full, correct dose of enzyme detergent – the enzymes (especially lipases) break down the body oil that holds the smell.
- Wash at the warmest temperature the care label allows. Heat dissolves oil better than cold water – a low temperature is a common reason the smell lingers.
- Do not cram the machine full. The garments need water and space to rinse the residue out properly.
- Dry the garment fully and promptly, ideally in fresh air or sun – damp fabric lets the bacteria bloom again, and sunlight is naturally antibacterial.
Skip the fabric softener – and other mistakes that make the smell worse
Some habits make sweat smell worse, not better. Avoid these:
- Fabric softener: it forms a film around the fibre and traps body oil and bacteria – the most common reason activewear keeps smelling. Skip it entirely.
- Too little detergent or too low a temperature: the oil is not dissolved, and the smell builds up over time.
- Leaving sweaty clothes damp in the gym bag or laundry basket: the bacteria get hours to grow before the garment even reaches the machine.
- More perfumed detergent on top of the smell: it masks but does not remove – the problem is the oil, not a lack of fragrance.
- Tumble drying or ironing before the smell is gone: heat fixes the remaining odour in the fibre.
Smell and yellow stains are two different problems
It is easy to confuse sweat smell with the yellow marks under the arms, but they have separate causes and separate solutions. The smell comes from bacteria and body oil in the fibre. The yellow, stiff marks, by contrast, are a chemical reaction between the aluminium in antiperspirant and the proteins in sweat – a discolouration problem, not an odour problem. You can have one without the other, and they are treated differently. Clearing the visible yellow marks is its own method.
Send the garment to us
If the sweat smell persists after several washing attempts, or it involves garments you cannot wash hard at home – wool, silk, suits, structured pieces – you can send it to us. We clean and treat according to the garment and its care label, so oil and odour are dissolved without damaging the fabric. You order online from anywhere in Norway, and you see the price before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my activewear smell of sweat even right after washing?+
Because the body oil was never fully removed. Synthetic fabrics cling to oil, and a low temperature, too little detergent or fabric softener let the residue stay. The bacteria bloom as soon as the fabric gets damp again. Wash warmer, use enzyme detergent and skip the softener.
Does vinegar help against sweat smell in clothes?+
Yes. A cup of white vinegar in a soak or rinse breaks down the odour compounds and reduces the bacteria, and the vinegar smell disappears as the garment dries. Combine it with an enzyme detergent and the warmest temperature the care label allows for the best effect.
Are sweat smell and yellow sweat stains the same thing?+
No. The smell comes from bacteria and body oil in the fibre, while the yellow marks are a chemical reaction between aluminium in antiperspirant and sweat. They have separate causes and solutions – you can have one without the other.
Can you remove set-in sweat smell for me?+
Yes. We clean and treat according to the garment and its care label, so oil and odour are dissolved without harming the fabric – useful for garments you cannot wash hard at home. You order online, and you see the price before you order.
